Company Profile
With a family nursery background dating to 1933, David B. Tankard decided to start his own
wholesale operation in December 1977 after working thirteen years at Tankard Nurseries
with his father and uncle.
David's Nursery is a family partnership owned by
David, his wife Suzanne, and their two sons, Dave and Van. Van is a 1991
horticultural graduate of Cornell University; he worked at Lancaster Farms
before returning to the Eastern Shore in 1992. Dave is an Electrical Engineering
graduate from Virginia
Tech and spent nine years as an officer in the U.S. Navy before joining David's
Nursery in 1997.
We grow a variety of different plants. Large quantities: Ilex,
Azalea, Taxus. Expanding lines include:
Hostas, Boxwood, Hydrangea, Day Lilies,
Crape Myrtles, Leyland Cypress, River Birch, Cryptomeria, and
Junipers. 90% of what
we grow we propagate ourselves.
The nursery is about 250 acres. 60 acres are used for above ground container
production and 100,000 pots are in ground for pot in pot production. The rest is
used by taxus (mostly) and field grown blue hollies.
